Wind Turbines/Harnessing the Wind

The centuries old dream of harnessing the wind efficiently is now a reality. The Wind turbines of today often stand 250 feet in the air and are mechanical and technical marvels that rely on bearings in their key components:

Gearbox
Increasing megawatt ratings require larger and higher capacity gearboxes. The operating conditions for rolling bearings in wind turbine gearboxes cannot be compared with those for static gearboxes. Highly dynamic forces with extreme peak loads and minimal loads, sudden load reversals and widely differing operating temperatures are some of the challenges facing the bearing arrangements. Bearings must have high static load safety factors. Bearings used are roller bearings, deep groove ball bearings and four point contact bearings

Generator
A generator operating in the nacelle of a wind turbine is subjected to significantly greater vibration loads than its counterpart on the ground. This additional permanent load has a negative influence on the cages and places a strain on the lubricant.

In the design of bearings for a generator, it is not only the size and design that play an important role. Special attention must be paid to the lubrication and protection against possible current passage. The bearing arrangement of a generator generally contains a combination of deep groove ball bearings or cylindrical roller bearings.

The passage of current in a wind turbine generator can cause serious damage to the raceways of bearings in the form of melt craters and false brinelling. It is advised to use current insulated bearings in many applications.

Wind tracking and Blade adjustment
It is critical that the turbines be aligned optimally to the wind. This is controlled by:

• Blade bearings (pitch bearings): In order to control the power output of the wind turbine, the blade angle must always be adjusted to the wind speed via the rotary motion of the blade bearing. Single or double-row four point contact bearings with or without gear teeth on the inner or outer ring are used here.
• Yaw bearing: A slewing ring is required in order to adjust the position of the nacelle to the wind direction. The wind load and the dynamic inertia forces are transferred via the raceways and the screw connections into the tower head. Single or double row four point contact bearings are used here.
• Blade adjustment: The rotor angle can be adjusted using electric or hydraulic systems. These use sealed spherical bushings that have corrosion protection.

This vertical group of industries touches everyone every day. At every point in the process of going from pulp to print these bearings have to meet the highest standards. In the initial phase of creating paper the rolling bearings in a paper machine must meet extreme requirements: Moisture, very high temperatures, shaft deflections, high speeds and long running times.

Special Solution: Use of spherical roller bearings that conform to E1 design with superior load carrying capacity, low operating temperatures and high service life. Also should conform to running accuracy specifications T52BW.

The process of converting paper into a usable form has very different bearing requirements. Slitters and rewinders require high speed ball bearings and linear motion bearings that have high running accuracy.

Special Solutions: Use of 'free running' insert bearings and pillow blocks. These have modified seals and slingers on both sides which allow for low start up torque and effective sealing even in high heat applications. Printing on paper is the final phase. To achieve the required pin sharp print quality you must have high precision and wear free bearing supports for the print rollers. This insures that the impression cylinder is supported with as little clearance, and as much rigidity as possible and with very few runout errors. The NAO style needle bearing with offset cage packets has become the standard. Needle rollers, Cam Followers and yoke rollers are used extensively in the distributor roller drives, gripper shaft controls and throughout the presses
